DIN 11864 is a sanitary joint which was introduced in 1998. At that time, the short and long versions were produced according to the same standard. This standard was split in 2006, whereby the long version remained DIN 11864 and the short version became DIN 11853.
These couplings have been developed for the aseptic and pharmaceutical industries and are currently the most sanitary coupling available. The sealing principle has been developed in such a way that there is no dead space between the coupling parts and the seal, so that it fits almost seamlessly. In addition, DIN 11864 couplings have long welding ends, making them extremely suitable for orbital welding. These links are divided into three groups namely:
A question we get asked regurlarly: 'Which part is welded onto the installation?' The answer is easy to remember. The side where the seal lies is welded onto the installation.
Note: as you can see, it is the opposite part with DIN 11864-1 than with the DIN 11851 coupling, because here the wire piece is welded onto the installation.
These couplings are available in DIN, INCH and ISO versions. The tube sizes are shown in the overview below.
Reihe A (DIN)\t\t | Reihe B (ISO)\t | Reihe C (INCH) |
13 x 1,5 | 13,5 x 1,6 | 17,2 x 1,65 |

154 x 2,0* | 85 x 2,0 |
*According to standard only available with DIN 11864-2
For the DIN 11864 coupling there are two possible sealing principles namely A and B. The most common form is sealing form A, with this sealing form is sealed by means of an O-ring construction. Type B, according to the standard the 'formdichtung', has a square as its shape. Type B, is difficult to obtain and rarely occurs in practice. The O-rings are available in EPDM. FKM, VMQ and HNBR and is available with an FDA or EC1935/2004 certificate.
According to the standard, components must be clearly marked with the following parts:
As standard, a DIN 11864 coupling complies with the hygiene class H3. This means that the fitting has an Ra of 0.8μm internally and an Ra of 1.6μm externally. In addition, all couplings are protected with end caps and individually wrapped with plastic film.
